water cycle (water lesson 1) Flashcards
What powers the hydrological system?
The sun.
What is the hydrological system?
The hydrological system includes evaporation, transpiration, evapotranspiration, condensation, precipitation, infiltration, percolation and surface runoff.
What is evaporation?
Water gaining heat and turning into water vapour.
What is transpiration?
Water lost from plants, then it becomes water vapour.
What is evapotranspiration?
Evaporation + Transpiration
What is condensation (in the hydrological system)?
Water vapour loses heat to the atmosphere and becomes clouds.
What is precipitation?
Rain.
What is infiltration?
Water moves from the atmosphere to soil through boundary areas where the atmosphere interfaces with soil.
What is percolation?
Water moves deeper into the soil and its layers because of gravity (prime moving force) and capillary forces.
What is surface runoff?
Water that flows off the surface.
