waves Flashcards
(31 cards)
what is amplitude?
the height of the wave
what is amplitude and frequency measured in?
hertz
what is frequency?
the number of complete wave cycles produced each second
what is wavelength?
the length of one complete cycle of a wave
what are the oscillations of a transverse wave?
oscillations are at right angles to the direction of the wave
what are the oscillations of a longitudinal wave?
oscillations are parallel to the direction of the wave
what is the method of the required practical: ripple tank? (4)
measure length of tray
fill tray with water, push the ruler down into the water at one end of the tray to create wave
measure the time it takes for the wave to move from one end to the other
calculate speed of wave with equation.
how can the wavelength of the water waves in a ripple tank be measured accurately?
measure the length of several waves and then divide it by the total distance by the number of waves
what is the human hearing range?
20 Hz- 20,000 Hz
how is ultra sound used?
it passes through liquids and reflects off surfaces
what is ultra sound?
sound above the range of human hearing
why is ultra sound used for unborn babies rather than x-rays?
x-rays show bones and are ionising which can damage cells
what is a seismograph?
an image taken from a seismometer which shows the amplitude of the earths motion at various times.
what is an ‘S wave’?
waves that can only travel through solids and aren’t detected in the other side of earth (can’t pass through earths liquid core)
what are ‘P waves’?
waves they can travel through side and liquids so can pass through all of earths layers and are detected on the other side of the earth
what type of waves are ‘S waves’?
transverse
what type of waves are ‘P waves’?
longitudinal

radio
micro
infrared radiation
visible light
ultraviolet
x-ray
gamma
what can radio waves be used for? (2)
transmitting radio
tv programmes across low distances
what can microwaves be used for? (3)
cooking food
sending signals
mobile phones
what can infrared waves be used for? (3)
night vision
security systems
remote controls
what can visible light waves be used for? (2)
seeing
cameras
what can ultraviolet light waves be used for? (3)
sunbeds
detecting forged bank notes
security coding
what can x-ray waves be used for?
x-ray machines
