waves Flashcards
(11 cards)
what are the two categories for waves?
transverse
longitudinal
examples of transverse waves
ripples on the surface of water
example of longitudinal waves
sound waves travelling in air
key fact about waves
all waves transfer energy form one place to another
differences between longitudinal and transverse waves:
longitudinal waves’ oscillations are parallel to the waves direction
while transverse waves oscillations are perpendicular-90 degrees
transverse waves have oscillations that form crests and troughs whereas longitudinal waves have oscillations that create compressions and rarefactions
what is refraction?
is the change of direction of a wave like light as it passes from one medium to another
what is the definition of amplitude
is the maximum displacement of a point on the wave from its resting or undistributed position
what is the definition of a wavelength?
is the distance from one point on a wave to the equivalent point on an adjacent wave
what is the crest?
highest point
what is the trough?
lowest point
