WBCs - Youtube video Flashcards
State the synonym for WBCs
Leukocytes
Leukocytes / …. …. … are specialised celss that … function…..
All leukocytes = originate from cells in …. …. called …. …. ….
Leukocytes = can in turn differentiate into a variety of different cell types that each have their own function
white blood cells
defend our body from pathogens
bone marrow
hematopoietic stem cells
Leukocytes - draw flowchart showing the different types
Leukocytes - Granulocytes, Angranulocytes and Megakaryocytes
1.Granulocytes - Neutrophil, Eosinophil and Basophil
2.Agranulocytes - Lymphocytes and Monocytes
Monocytes = macrophages
Lymphocytes = B-Lymphocytes, T-Lymphocytes and Natural Killer Cells
B-Lymphocytes = Plasma cells & Memory cells
T-lymphocytes = Helper T cells, KIller T cells, Memory T cells, Suppressor cells
3.Megakaryocytes - Platelets
Granulocytes
Simply Name 3 types of cells
1 sentence about appearance
Neutrophils, Eosinophils & Basophils
Granulocytes - cells are characterised by the presence of granulocytes in their cytoplasm and their lobe-shaped nuclei
Neutrophils, Eosionphils & Basophils - 1 line basic sentence about function
Neutrophils = Phagocytic cells that can seek out & engulf bacterial cells that infect our body
Eosionophils = involved in allergic reactions and parasitic infections
Basophils = contain special chemicals (histamines) that areinvolved in inflammation & also contain an anticlotting agent called heparin
Name an anticlotting agent
Heparin
Megakaryocytes - recall and read
Mekaryocytes -> platelets
. Pieces of megakaryocytes break off - form structures called platelets (thrombocytes)
Platelets = lack a nucleus
Cut in blood vessel develops = platelets will bind to and cut and aggregate within minutes to form a temporary patch
Agranulocytes - recall & read
. Cells lack granules
. Have spherical or kidney shaped nuclei
. Monocytes - enter tissue & develop into macrophages, which are large scavenger cells that engulf pathogens via phagocytosis
. Lymphocytes = cells involved in acquired immune response
. Differentiate into 3 types - natural killer cells, B lymphocytes and T lymphocytes
Recall and read lymphocytes subtypes
Natural killer cells - seek out and destroy infected cells and cancer cells
B lymphocytes - cells that are part of the antibody mediated response - B lymphocytes differentiate into plasma cells that produce the antibodies and memory cells that protect the body from reinfection.
T-lymphocytes = part of the cell-mediated response, T lymphocytes differentiate into killer T cells, which recognise foreign antigens and destroy pathogens, Helper T cells which release chemicals and assist maturation of other cells
Memory T cells - protect from reinfection
Suppressor cells - regulate and suppress the immune system
