Weather Flashcards
(26 cards)
The amount of water vapor in the air
Humidity
A low-level, billowy cloud that commonly has a top that resembles cotton balls and a dark bottom
Cumulus Cloud
A gray cloud that has a flat, uniform base and that commonly forms at very low altitudes
Stratus Cloud
A feathery cloud that is composed of ice crystals and that has the highest altitude of any cloud in the sky
Cirrus Cloud
Is a dense, towering vertical cloud associated with thunderstorms and atmospheric instability, forming from water vapor carried by powerful upward air currents
Cumulonimbus Cloud
The change of state from a gas to a liquid
Condensation
The change of state from a liquid to a gas
Evaporation
Any form of water that falls to Earth’s surface from the clouds; includes rain, snow, sleet, and hail
Precipitation
Precipitation that flows over the land and into streams and rivers
Runoff
Is liquid water in the form of droplets that have condensed from atmospheric water vapor and then becomes heavy enough to fall under gravity
Rain
A form of precipitation consisting of ice pellets, often mixed with rain or snow
Sleet
Forms of ice crystals that precipitate from the atmosphere and undergo changes on the Earth’s surface
Snow
Pellets of frozen rain that fall in showers from cumulonimbus clouds
Hail
Are moist
Polar – Maritime Air mass
Originate over the warm waters of the tropics and Gulf of Mexico
Tropical – Maritime Air mass
Dry air near the surface
Polar – Continental Air mass
Formed over land in area close to the equator
Tropical – Continental Air mass
The boundary of an advancing mass of cold air, in particular the trailing edge of the warm sector of a low-pressure system
Cold Front
The boundary of an advancing mass of warm air, in particular the leading edge of the warm sector of a low-pressure system
Warm Front
A storm with thunder and lightning and typically also heavy rain or hail
Thunderstorm
The occurrence of a natural electrical discharge of very short duration and high voltage between a cloud and the ground or within a cloud, accompanied by a bright flash and typically also thunder.
Lightning
A loud rumbling or crashing noise heard after a lightning flash due to the expansion of rapidly heated air
Thunder
Is a rapidly rotating column of air that is in contact with both the surface of the Earth and a cumulonimbus cloud or, in rare cases, the base of a cumulus cloud
Tornado
A storm with a violent wind, in particular a tropical cyclone in the Caribbean
Hurricane
