how does a tropical storm develop
Warm ocean water (over 27°C) heats the air above it, causing it to rise rapidly and create low pressure at the surface.
The rising warm, moist air cools and condenses, forming large storm clouds and releasing energy (latent heat), which powers the storm.
Coriolis effect causes the storm to spin, and as it gathers more energy and moisture from the ocean, wind speeds increase — forming a tropical storm.
What is the definition of a weather hazard?
A weather hazard is a severe weather event that poses a risk to people, property, and the environment.
True or False: Weather hazards only occur in tropical regions.
False
Fill in the blank: ________ are intense storms that originate over warm ocean waters.
Tropical cyclones
What are the primary factors that contribute to flooding?
Heavy rainfall, rapid snowmelt, and storm surges.
Name one type of extreme weather associated with winter.
Snowstorms
Multiple choice: Which of the following is a characteristic of a drought? A) Excessive rainfall B) Prolonged dry conditions C) High humidity
B) Prolonged dry conditions
What is the main cause of hurricanes?
Warm ocean water and atmospheric conditions.
True or False: Tornadoes are more common in the UK than in the United States.
False
Fill in the blank: A ________ is a rapidly rotating column of air that extends from a thunderstorm to the ground.
tornado
What scale is used to classify the intensity of hurricanes?
The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale
Multiple choice: Which of the following can cause landslides? A) Earthquakes B) Heavy rainfall C) Both A and B
C) Both A and B
What is the difference between weather and climate?
Weather refers to short-term atmospheric conditions, while climate is the long-term average of weather.
True or False: Heatwaves can lead to increased health risks.
True
Fill in the blank: ________ are large-scale weather systems that can bring heavy rain and strong winds.
Depressions
What is a significant impact of extreme weather events on agriculture?
Crop damage and loss of yield.
Multiple choice: Which hazard is primarily associated with coastal areas? A) Tornadoes B) Tsunamis C) Droughts
B) Tsunamis
What type of weather event can lead to a storm surge?
Hurricanes or tropical storms.
True or False: Climate change can exacerbate the frequency and intensity of weather hazards.
True
Fill in the blank: The ________ is a measure of the amount of moisture in the air.
humidity
What is the primary effect of severe thunderstorms?
Heavy rain, strong winds, hail, and lightning.
Multiple choice: Which of the following is NOT a type of severe weather? A) Flash floods B) Earthquakes C) Blizzards
B) Earthquakes
What is the role of the Met Office in the UK regarding weather hazards?
To provide weather forecasts and warnings for severe weather.
