Q

Explain carbonation

A

When rain falls it absorbs some carbon dioxide (CO2) while passing through the atmosphere. The CO2 mixes with the rain turning it into weak carbonic acid. Limestone rocks contain the mineral calcium carbonate. The weak acid rain reacts with the rock an slowly dissolves it. Limestone is permeable which means water can pass through it, eroding it further.
