33:2 Benedícam Dóminum in omni témpore: * semper laus eius in ore meo.
I will bless the Lord at all times, always, His praise in my mouth
at all times - even in trial and suffering
33:3 In Dómino laudábitur ánima mea: * áudiant mansuéti, et læténtur.
In the Lord shall be praised my soul….let them hear, the meek, and rejoice
mansueti = manu (hand) accostumed (sueti) = tamed…let those still in the struggle hear what God has done!
the saints will be praised for their soul, but because the Lord has done it “in the Lord”
33:4 Magnificáte Dóminum mecum: * et exaltémus nomen eius in idípsum.
Magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together
- acknowledge the Lord who is truly great, to be so, speak it out loud in the liturgy
33:5 Exquisívi Dóminum, et exaudívit me: * et ex ómnibus tribulatiónibus meis erípuit me.
I sought (quested) the Lord, and he heard me; and from all my tribulations he delivered (ripped) me
“i sought Him” when I was tempted and he delivered me
33:6 Accédite ad eum, et illuminámini: * et fácies vestræ non confundéntur.
Cede (come) to him and be illuminated; and your faces will not be confounded
you will not be covered with confusion by the refusal of what you hope and ask for
33:7 Iste pauper clamávit, et Dóminus exaudívit eum: * et de ómnibus tribulatiónibus eius salvávit eum.
This pauper cried, and the Lord heard him: and from all his tribulations saved him
33:8 Immíttet Ángelus Dómini in circúitu timéntium eum: * et erípiet eos.
Enter the Angel of the Lord to circle around those that fear him, and deliver them.
a reason for confidence - God send angels the moment a soul is in danger - one of them equal to an army. Such a guard waits on you!
33:9 Gustáte et vidéte quóniam suávis est Dóminus: * beátus vir, qui sperat in eo.
Taste and see how sweet is the Lord, blessed the man who hopes in him
in a trial, learn by experience! the Lord will help you
33:10 Timéte Dóminum, omnes sancti eius: * quóniam non est inópia timéntibus eum.
Fear the Lord, all his saints. for none is poor that fear him
to fear = to keep the commandments
33:11 Dívites eguérunt et esuriérunt: * inquiréntes autem Dóminum non minuéntur omni bono.
The rich suffer want and are starving….but the seekers (inquirers) of the Lord are not deprived (minus-ed) of any good
those indulging in the world are hungry and have no peace
33:12 Veníte, fílii, audíte me: * timórem Dómini docébo vos.
Come, children, listen to me. the fear of the Lord I will teach you. (make you docile to, demonstrate)
33:13 Quis est homo qui vult vitam: * díligit dies vidére bonos?
Who is the man that desires life: who delights in days he sees are good?
who is it that really desires a fortaste of heaven in this world and is willing to walk the narrow way for “good days”
vult = volo = volition
33:14 Próhibe linguam tuam a malo: * et lábia tua ne loquántur dolum.
Prohibit your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking guile.
33:15 Divérte a malo, et fac bonum: * inquíre pacem, et perséquere eam.
Divert from evil and do good. Seek (inquire) peace, and pursue it.
33:16 Óculi Dómini super iustos: * et aures eius in preces eórum.
The eyes of the Lord are on the just, and His ears unto their prayers
33:17 Vultus autem Dómini super faciéntes mala: * ut perdat de terra memóriam eórum.
But the countenance of the Lord is against them who do evil: to destroy (perdition) from earth their memory
33:18 Clamavérunt iusti, et Dóminus exaudívit eos: * et ex ómnibus tribulatiónibus eórum liberávit eos.
They cried, the just, and the Lord heard them. and from all their tribulations He liberated them
33:19 Iuxta est Dóminus iis, qui tribuláto sunt corde: * et húmiles spíritu salvábit.
Close (juxt) is the Lord unto them, who are contrite of heart (tribulated heart), and the humble of spirit he saves.
33:20 Multæ tribulatiónes iustórum: * et de ómnibus his liberábit eos Dóminus.
Many are the tribulations of the just; but from all these the Lord will liberate them
33:21 Custódit Dóminus ómnia ossa eórum: * unum ex his non conterétur.
The Lord keeps all their bones, one of them shall not be broken
at the last judgement, our bones will return to us! and be glorified at the resurrection
33:22 Mors peccatórum péssima: * et qui odérunt iustum, delínquent.
The death of sinners is evil (pessimisstic), and those who hate the just…will be guilty (delinquent)
it is evil, b/c it begins eternal torment
33:23 Rédimet Dóminus ánimas servórum suórum: * et non delínquent omnes qui sperant in eo.
The Lord will redeem the souls of his servants: and they will not be guilty, all who hope in him.
60:2 Exáudi, Deus, deprecatiónem meam: * inténde oratióni meæ.
Hear, O God, my supplication: intend to my prayer
60:3 A fínibus terræ ad te clamávi: * dum anxiarétur cor meum, in petra exaltásti me.
To the ends of the earth to thee have I cried: when in anxiety was my heart, on a rock you exalted me
