Week 0 Flashcards
(3 cards)
What is a computer network?
Consists of two or more computers that are linked in order to share resources, exchange files, or allow electronic communications.
Computer networks today
Communication is really important. Creation and interconnection of robust data networks has had a effect on communication, new platform of modern communications.
Networks help create a world which borders, distances, physical limitations become less relevant.
Networks have changed the way people work, learn, play, and the way we communicate.
Common networking terms
Node: Single device in a network.
A host: A node or other device that is assigned a unique TCP/IP network address that enables it to communicate with other hosts connected to the network.
Transmission: Transmitting data signals or the progress of those data signals after having been transmitted.
Wireless(Unbounded or unguided) transmission: Sending data over the air using radio, microwave, or infrared signals between nodes.
Wired(Bounded or guided) transmission media: Sending data through cable using light or electrical signals between nodes.
Transmission media: Communication pathways that carry the data signals between devices.
Internetwork device: Device like switch or wireless access point that connects nodes to each other and local network.
A network broken up(segmented) to cope with restrictions placed on the media by standards to increase network performance and security.
Segment: A part of network, single length of cable, an electrical connection between devices that share communication pathway, like cable between computer and switch.
Data communications: The transfer of data using analogue or digital signals.
Backbone: Fast link that connects segments and shared devices on a LAN. Backbones also created between LANs, WANs, and networks and the internet by internetwork devices.
Link: Active connection created over media between devices.
