Week 1 Flashcards
the operating system of East Asian medicine, principles applied in all [good] treatments. Principle of treatment is a general rule guiding selection of methods of treatment. Example: Treat the root.
principles of treatment
principles used in specific treatments, but not all treatments, such as clear heat. But in English we often call these ‘treatment principles’ too.
method of treatment
For example, if a patient has contracted external wind-cold, the treatment principle is to release the exterior, dispel wind, and disperse coldness.
– The function of Máhuáng Tāng is to release the exterior, dispel wind, and disperse coldness.
Methods of Treatment (Minor Treatment Principles)
very specific
major principles of treatment
general
ie. regulate yin and yang, support the right
Treatment based on pattern identification:
basing treatment on the pattern, not the disease.
Treatment based on disease identification
basing treatment on the disease, and from there going to the pattern.
Excess is treated by draining: when evils exist, and right qì isn’t too weak, remove or transform the evil.

Deficiency is treated by supplementing: supplement qì, blood, yīn, yáng, fluids, organs, etc. when right qì is weak and evils are not strong.

Dispel the evil: Any method of treating used to eliminate evils.
-6 evils- heat, cold, damp, wind, summer heat
Support the right: Strengthening the
body’s right qì so it can fight against the evils.

Attack: Offensive therapy to forcefully make something leave the body. This includes sweating, vomiting, and inducing a bowel movement. The patient must be strong enough to withstand attack. (Sometimes attack is used to mean any kind of draining.)
Attack followed by supplementation:Destroy the evil first, then supplement when the evil is gone. This is for a strong evil, but right qì can withstand the attack.
Supplementation followed by attack:Right qi is too weak to withstand an attack, so the patient must be strengthened before the evil can be attacked.
Simultaneous supplement and attack:
can be used when both the evil and right are strong, or if evil is
strong but the patient cannot withstand attacking treatment
alone.
