Week 1 Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is the primary focus of Human-Computer Interaction ?
Focuses on humans interacting with computers and creating user-friendly, intuitive solutions to make those interactions accessible.
Why is usability an important concept in HCI ?
It makes sure the interfaces are intuitive and effective.
Meeting user’s needs by being easy to learn, efficient and satisfying to use
it boosts productivity and user happiness.
What role did GUI play in HCI ?
Pioneered by Xerox PARC and popularized by Apple and Microsoft played a pivot role in making user interfaces accessible to more audiences rather than specialist.
Describe the shift in HCI in shift that occurred in 2000 with the introduction of smartphone and tablets.
shifted to touch and responsive interfaces and brought about new challenges such as designing for smaller screens and optimizing touch interfaces.
What UCD (User Centered Design) and what is it significant in HCI ?
An approach prioritizes the end user’s needs throughout the design process.
List and explain other foundational concepts in HCI other than usability.
FEEDBACK - provides user with response to actions they take on the interface
AFFORDANCE - design feature that indicate how an object should be used.
User Centered Design
Consistency
How has the rise of technologies like VR, AR, and AI influenced modern HCI?
It has included interactions such as gesture-based, spatial, natural language-driven.
Explain the historical evolution of HCI from the 1940s to present-day technologies.
HCI began in the 1940s-60s with complex, text-based command systems for specialists. In the 1970s-80s, GUIs democratized computer use with visual interfaces. The 1990s focused on web usability, and the 2000s introduced touchscreens with mobile devices. Since the 2010s, HCI has expanded to voice, VR, AR, and AI-driven interfaces.
