Week 1 Flashcards
(6 cards)
What is ventilation?
Movement of air between the atmosphere and the lungs
What is repiration?
The exchange of )2 and CO2 between the lungs and the blood
If ventilation is __________, respiration will be impaired.
Impaired
Aerobic Metabolism
Requires oxygen
Fuel source: Utilizes carbohydrates, fats, and proteins
Occurs in the mitochondria
By-products: Water (H₂O) and carbon dioxide (CO₂)
ATP yield: ~38 ATP per molecule of glucose
Efficiency: Highly efficient, ~19x more than anaerobic metabolism
Used in: Long-duration, low-to-moderate intensity activity
Anerobic Metabolism
Does NOT require oxygen
Fuel source: Utilizes only carbohydrates (glucose)
Occurs in the cytoplasm
By-product: Lactic acid (lactate + H⁺)
ATP yield: ~2 ATP per molecule of glucose
Efficiency: Low; quick energy burst, not sustainable
Used in: Short bursts of high-intensity activity
