Professional Reflective Practice

Reflection is an essential element of learning
Thinking back on experience, and carefully re-evaluating it, is an essential part of ongoing personal and professional development
Involves critical thinking – deconstructing an event and reasoning the origins of situations (Brookfield, 1987)
“A dialogue of thinking and doing through which I become more skilled” (Donald Schon, 1987, p.31)
The ability to make meaningful connections between theory and practice, providing a rationale for action
Reflective Practice
in its simplest form is what?
Difference between reflective practice and casual thinking?
what is moon’s definition of it?
Reflective practice is, in its simplest form, thinking about or reflecting on what you do. It is closely linked to the concept of learning from experience, in that you think about what you did, and what happened, and decide from that what you would do differently next time, Thinking about what has happened is part of being human. However, the difference between casual ‘thinking’ and ‘reflective practice’ is that reflective practice requires a conscious effort to think about events, and develop insights into them. Once you get into the habit of using reflective practice, you will probably find it useful both at work and at home.
Reflective practice is an active, dynamic action-based and ethical set of skills, placed in real time and dealing with real, complex and difficult situations.

Reflection is the Bridge between theory and practice
Academics also tend to agree that reflective practice bridges the gap between the ‘high ground’ of theory and the ‘swampy lowlands’ of practice.
In other words, it helps us to explore theories and to apply them to our experiences in a more structured way. These can either be formal theories from academic research, or your own personal ideas. It also encourages us to explore our own beliefs and assumptions and to find solutions to problems.
What are the 4R’s of reflective thinking
Reporting
Relating
Reasoning
Reconstructing
Level 1
Reporting (& Responding)
Report what happened or what the issue or incident involved is
Why is it relevant?
respond to the incident or issue by making observations, expressing your opinion, or asking questions
Level 2
Relating
Relate or make a connection between the incident or issue and your own skills, professional experience or discipline knowledge.
Haver I seen this before?
Were the conditions the same or different?
do I have the skills and knowledge to deal with this?
Explain.
Level 3
Reasoning
Highlight in detail significant factors underlying the incident or issue.
Explain and show why they are important to an understanding of the incident or issue.
Refer to relevant theory and lit to support your reasoning.
Cojnsider different perspectives how woudl a knowledggable person perceive/handle this?
What ethics involved?
Level 4
Reconstructing
Reframe or reconstruct future practice or professional understanding.
How would I deal with this next time?
What might work and why?
Are there different options?
What might happen if…>??
Are my ideas supported by theory? CAn I make changes to benefit others?
Description vs reflection
scenario / past experience: Student on a recent placement
Description:
The physical environment, where he was (setting), who he talked to, who else was there, what he did, or was told to do.
VERSUS
REFLECTION:
How he felt, what he learnt from the experience, what he discovered what he did not already know, perceptions did he have before the placement, did the experience confirm or challenge these perceptions, what plans does he have for skill dev in this setting?
