Week 1: Musculoskeletal System (Joint) Flashcards
(23 cards)
Classifications of Joints (functionally)
- synarthrosis: immovable
- amphiarthrosis: slightly movable
- diarthrosis: freely movable
Classifications of Joints (structurally)
- fibrous
- cartilaginous
- synovial
Fibrous Joint
- Fibrous connective tissue
- no joint cavity
- immovable or slightly movable
e. g. sutures, tibiofibular joint
Cartilaginous Joint
- cartilage
- no joint cavity
- immovable or slightly movable
e. g. 1st sternocostal joint, pubic symphysis, intervertebral joint
Synovial Joint
- bone ends covered in articular cartilage
- present joint cavity
- freely movable
Structure of synovial joint
- articular capsule
- joint cavity
- synovial fluid
- articular cartilage
- reinforcing ligament
- sensory neuron & blood vessel
Articular capsule
- surround joint, enclose cavity
- 2 layers:
outer fibrous layer - stabilize bone
inner synovial membrane - produce synovial fluid
Joint cavity
- separate articulating bone
- contain synovial fluid
Synovial fluid
- shock absorption
- reduce friction
- supply O2, nutrient to cartilage cell
- remove waste
Articular cartilage
- cover end of articulating bones
- shock absorption
- reduce friction
reinforcing ligament
stabilize joint
sensory neuron, blood vessel
- sensory neuron: detect pain. monitor proprioception
- blood vessel: supply synovial membrane
Menisci
- joint stabilize
- reduce friction
- shock absorption
Muscle tendon
- stabilize joint
Bursae & tendon sheath
- bag of synovial fluid
- reduce friction
fat pads
- adipose tissue
- cushion & protection joint structure
Types of synovial joint
- pivot
- plane
- condylar
- saddle
- Hinge
- Ball and socket joint
Pivot Joint
- rotation
e. g. proximal radioulnar, atlas-axis joint
Plane Joint
- gliding movement
e. g. intercarpal & intertarsal joint
Condylar Joint
- flexion, extension, adduction, abduction, circumduction
e. g. metacarpophalangeal, wrist
Saddle Joint
- flexion, extension, adduction, abduction, ciircumduction
e. g. carpometacarpal joint of thumb
Hinge Joint
- flexion, extension
e. g. elbow, knee, ankle, interphalangeal (finger) joint
Ball and socket Joint
- flexion, extension, adduction, abduction, circumduction / rotation
e. g. Shoulder, hip joint
