CNS depression
loss of inhabition, loss of judgment, vomiting, increased confidence, agitation, agression, disorientation, slurred speach, ataxia, nystagmum, tachycardia, hypotnesion, hypothermia
what are the clincal presentations of alcohol poisioning?
confusion, loss of corodination, vomiting, seizures, irregular breathing, hypothermia, hypotension, stupor
what are some complications of long term alcohol use?
cardioa- Afib, cardiomyopathy, clotting problems
gastrointestinal - liver diseas, hepatitis, GI bleeds, enlarged liver
malnutrition, vitamin deficensy, dehydration
alcoholic ketoacidosis, electrlyte imbalences
CNS- memeory probelms, subdural haemorrage
what is the managment of intoxicated paitents?
supportive care
identify and manage co-exostong conditions
resus/monitoring
hypoxia, hypovolemia/dehydration/nausea/vomiting/agression
what can happen with the sudden withdrawal of long term alcohol use?
autonomic excitation - tremors sweating, agitation, tachy, hyperthermia, hypertension
neuro- hyperreflexia, hallucinations, seizures, nightmares
delerium
what is the mangment for alcohol withdrawl?
supportive care exclude other causes IV manage dehyrdration and seizures request MICA
what products contain methanol?
antifreeze preperations polishes pesticides industrial products paint thinners methylated spirits
what is the mangment of methanol poisioning?
ABCs MICA treate seizures check BSL antidote
what are the CNS mechanisims of alcholol?
impared nerve transmission
inhibitory calcium entry into nerve cells - enhancing GABA
affecrs pituitary gland inhibiting ADH
what are the circulatory mechanisims of alcohol?
vasomotor neurons depressed causing vasodilation- hypotnsion, rapid heat loss, tachycardia
what is the definition of alcohol intoxication?
point where CNS id depressed enough to cause alterations in mood, physical and mental abilities
whatis the definition of alchol poisioning?
condition where a toxic amount of alcohol has been cosnumed causinf CNS to become so depressed that there are life threatening consequences
what is the definition of alcoholism?
physical or psychological dependence on alcohol and the need to consume it despite the negatve eddexts

visual imparement/blindness

what is a lethal dose of methanol?
0.05-0.1 ml/kg
what is toxic about methanol?
the metabolites - formic acid, and formeldohyde
what is the toxidrome effects of ethylene glycol? where is it found and how much is a lethal dose?
CNS depression, metabolic acidosis and renal failure. 1 ml/kg lethal and found in antifreesze
what are the symptoms of alcoholic ketoacidosis?
severe nausea and hyper emisis severe abdominal pain tachycardia hypotension increased respiratory rare
