Approx 190 countries are eligible under the UN system to be members of the WHO
Only one of many that work collaboratively on global health issues
UN Economic and Social Council (UNECOSOC)
Serves as the central form for discussion of international economic and social issues
And for formulating policy recommendations addressed to Member States and the UN system
UN General Assembly:
The main deliberative, policymaking, and representative organization of the UN
Provides unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the charter
They meet in regular sessions intensively from Sept to December annually
World Bank:
Not a bank in common sense
Made up of two unique development institutions owned by 187 member countries :
International bank for reconstruction and development (IBRD)
International development Association (IDA)
Both play a different but collaborative role in advancing the vision of inclusive and sustainable globalization
Overall GOAL of the World Bank is to: provide reliable, financial and technical assistance to people in developing countries around the world
United Nations Environment Program:
UNEP, Working to highlight the complex inter-linkage between climate change and health
Concern to this agency is the plight of indigenous and poor people around the world who are often marginalized to geographical areas facing the Greatest environmental risks and challenges of climate change
Food and agriculture Organization of the UN:
Mandate is to raise level of nutrition, improve agricultural productivity, better the lives of rural population and contribute to the growth of the world economy
Address to malnutrition in causes of natural disasters, war, and related strife is crucial to reduce mortality and morbidity among affected populations
A central watch-dog in monitoring and addressing the growing world food crisis
United Nations Population Fund:
An international development agency that promotes the right of every woman, man and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity
Supports countries in using population data for policies and programs to reduce poverty and to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, every young person is free of HIV and every girl and women is treated with dignity and respect
United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime:
Mandated to assist the UN member states in their struggle against illicit drugs, crime, and terrorism
United Nations AIDs:
Bring together the resources of the UNAIDS secretariat and 10 Un system organizations for coordinated and accountable efforts to unite the world against HIV/AIDS
United Nations International Children Fund:
The driving force that helps build a world were the rights of every children are realized
This organization has the global authority to influence decision-makers, a variety of partners at front-line/grassroots level to turn the most innovative ideas into realities
