Q

Types and locations of faucets/sinks

A

-On central lab benches
-Central rubber faucet: deionized water (solvent for almost every reaction/solution)
-Left faucet: pressurized tap water
-Right faucet: regular tap water

17
Q

Cleaning glassware procedure

A

-rinse with tap water and detergent
-final rinse should be with deionized water

18
Q

Fire alarm procedure

A

-All students must evacuate lab
-all electronic equipment (hot plates and stir plates) must be turned off/unplugged
-do not pick up belongings before leaving

19
Q

Types of disposal bins

A

-Regular trash bin: paper towels, face masks
-Contaminated solids receptacle: chemically contaminated paper towels, gloves
-Broken glass bin: broken glass (chemical free)
-Chemical waste container: leftover chemicals after experiment, found in AI hood (use funnel to pour waste into waste container)
-Pipet waste container: disposable pipets

20
Q

How is fire put out in lab?

A

small fires can be put out using a beaker, fire blanket can be used if fire spreads to clothes, AI can use fire extinguisher if fire is large

21
Q

Safety Data Sheet (SDS)

A

should be consulted for each chemical used to determine if there are any special recommendations for exposure situations

21
Q

National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Diamond

A

Top (red) diamond: flammability
Left (blue) diamond: health hazard info
Right (yellow) diamond: reactivity hazard info
Bottom (white) diamond: special hazard info

22
Q

Spill cleaning procedure

A

-get spill kit and alert AI
-stop spread of liquid by surrounding spill with absorbent from kit, then cover whole spill with absorbent
-scoop up absorbent with scoop pan and put absorbent into plastic bag
-tie off plastic bag and place into another plastic bag, label it, then dispose in solid waste container
-for acids, use baking soda to neutralize spill
-for bases, use citric acid to neutralize spill
-hydrofluoric acid and mercury require special cleaning instructions
-wipe down area after cleaning

23
Q

Contents of spill kit

A

-material to absorb spill, bags to dispose of absorbent

24
How to avoid contamination
-never return chemicals back to reagent bottle after removing them -do not use lab implements, such as spatulas, in different reagent bottles without cleaning the implement between uses -pour chemical into beaker before pouring into more delicate glassware such as burette
25
Good chemical storage location
cool, dry, dark, like chemical storage cabinet (do not use fume hood for longterm storage of chemicals)
