Week 3 Flashcards
Anatomy
Study of the structures of the body and the relationship of these structures to one another
Physiology
The branch of biology that is concerned with the process and function of parts of the body
Respiratory System
Structures including the lungs, bronchi, trachea, larynx, mouth, and nose that are used in breathing for life and speech
Laryngeal system
Structures of the larynx used for sound production
Articulately/ resonating system
Structures used during sound production, including the oral cavity, nasal cavity, tongue, and soft palate
Adduction
When the vocal folds close or come together during vibration
Abduction
When the vocal folds open or spread apart during vibration
Velopharyngeal Closure
Contact of the velum with the lateral and posterior pharyngeal walls, thus separating the oral and nasal cavities
Fundamental frequency
The lowest frequency component of a complex vibration
Impairment
A loss of structure or function
Disability
The functional consequence of an impairment
Deaf
Term used to describe a person whose hearing loss is in the severe to profound range
Deaf community
A group of persons who share a common means of communication (ASL) that facilitates group cohesion and identity
American Sign Language
A complex nonvocal language that contains elaborate syntax and semantics. Proficiency in its use is one of the primary methods by which a deaf individual becomes part of the deaf community
Audiology
Professionals discipline involving the assessment, remediation and prevention of disorders of hearing and balance
Outer Ear
The section of the ear compromised of the pinna and the external auditory meats or ear canal
Middle Ear
Section of the ear containing the ossicles. It is bounded laterally by the tympanic membrane and medially by the cochlea
Inner ear
Interior section of the ear, which contains the cochlea and vestibular system. It supplies information to the brain regarding balance, space, orientation, and hearing
Conductive System
Part of the auditory system made up of the outer and middle ear
Sensorineural System
Part of the auditory system made up of the inner ear and cranial nerve VIII
Otitis Media
Inflammation of the middle ear
Pressure equalization tube
A small diameter tube that is surgically placed in the ear drum to provide ventilation of the of the middle ear space via the external auditory meatus
Typanogram
A graph generated during acoustic immittance testing that depicts compliance of the eardrum relative to changes in air pressure
Air conduction
A method of evaluating hearing by transmitting sound to the to the inner ear via the outer and middle ear
