Q

Three problems with Utilitarianism

A
  1. No one can consider all the variables involved in happiness. It is too complicated. Calculating the qualities of pleasureis nearly impossible as these are highly subjective and varyfrom person to person and animal to animal.
  2. It is an affront to family loyalty. If our child were on the track in the Trolley problem, we would have to sacrifice him/her for the greater good.
  3. The “ends justify the means”: can cause more harm than good. Kant claimed that we do not always know and cannot always control the consequences of our actions.
