week 4 Flashcards
(13 cards)
appraisal theory
the process by which we influence what emotions we experience. consist of emotion awareness and regulating arousal level
secondary appraisel (regulating arousal level) depens ons
- previous experiences,
- own abilities, (learned) strategy (approach/avoidant),
- different responses possible
- determines which emotion
renewal
renewal is the return of the controlled respons to the controlled stimulus without presence of the uncontrolled stimulus, even after extinction had taken place. this is outside of the extinction context
reinstatement
is the return of the controlled response after extinction to the controlled stimulus because the uncontrolled stimulus was also presented again
spontaneous recovery
re-emergence of fear after a delay. so quicker than renewal and in the extinction context
functional connectivity between vmPFC and amygdala associates with
quicker habituation
less functional connectivity between vmPFC and amygdala associates with
failure to habituate (fear response decreases after repeated exposure)
compared to children and adulst, adolescents are less effective in downregulating fear responses to innately fear evoking stimuli
this is paralleled by a stronger amygdala response to observing fearful faces and less downregulation from the (vm)PFC
extinction works by
forming a new memory
extinction in adolescents is … and this is important because extinction mirrors …. and thus …
- less, 2. exposure(CBT), 3. CBT is less effective in adolescents
reappraisal (brain region)
left IFG (inferior frontal gyrus)
the recruiment of these regions during reappraisal … with age
develops linearly
reappraisal
forming a new interpreation
