A
  • fairly front and fairly close unrounded vowel
  • In word-final position frequently undergoes happY tensing
  • Short FLEECE vowel [i] has universally replaced older KIT vowel [ɪ] = happY tensing.
  • Cf. happy [-i] v. happier [-ɪə(ɹ)].
