What is the purpose of conscientious objection in nursing?
To protect a nurse’s moral integrity while maintaining patient safety and care continuity.
What makes an ACD valid?
It must be made voluntarily by a competent adult, free from coercion, and clearly applicable.
What is the purpose of an NFR order?
To avoid harmful or non-beneficial interventions at end of life while respecting patient wishes.
What’s the goal of palliative care?
- Comfort
- Support
- Quality of life - not cure.
How is euthanasia different from withdrawal of futile treatment?
- Euthanasia is intentional death
- Withdrawal allows natural death from disease.
What is the Principle of Double Effect?
Ethical justification for actions (e.g., pain relief) that may have unintended negative effects, like hastened death.
When can therapeutic privilege be used?
In very limited cases when disclosing info may seriously harm the patient, or when the patient chooses not to know.
What do the NHMRC guidelines say about organ/tissue procurement?
Respect dignity, wishes of the deceased, protect all involved, and prioritise patients and families over procurement interests.
