overweight/obesity: When weight reaches a level that is associated with higher risk of disease and disability/death classified: * Underweight: <18.5 * Normal range: 18.5 - 24.9 * Overweight >25 * Pre-obese: 25.0 - 29.9 * Obese class 1: 30.0 - 34.9 * Obese class 2: 35.0 - 39.9 * Obese class 3: >40

What factors besides energy in & energy out may
have a role in development and maintenance of
weight gain?
A
- behavioural and other factors come into play in terms of gainaing/weight loss
1. Medications - depression/anxiety medication can facilitate weight gain
2. Disease states will affect energy in vs energy out- Type 2 diabetes
- Acute disease state: utilitsing more energy out to regenerate new cells
- Social factors: indiviauls heritage/culture affect how they eat/what they eat
- Psychological factors
- Emotional eating
- Leptin/grehlin - hunger hormones
* One keeps you feeling full
* The other tells you you are hungry - Genetics and intrauterine imprinting/ epigenetics:
- Epigenetics: the study of changes in organisms caused by modification of gene expression rather than alteration of the genetic code itself
- Study: looked at what pregnant women ate while pregnant and how that affected their offspring
