week 6 Flashcards
What are the three elements of the Dark triad
Psycopathy, narcissism, and machiavellianism (sadism as an addition, forming dark tetrad)
what are the traits of psychopathy
Low empathy, low remorse, typically charming, typically impulsive, willing to hurt others if it HELPS them.
What are the traits of machiavellianism
Morally flexible, ends justify the means, schemer, unsentimental realism, willing to hurt others if it serves the greater good.
What are the traits of Narcissism
Inflated sense of self, belief in own superiority, expect and demand attention and praise, reduced empathy, antagonism towards others, sense of entitelement, oblivious to hurting others.
What are the traits of Sadism
The key word is ENJOYS hurting others
What is the key paper for Dark triad
paper by Delroy Paulhaus, and Kevin Williams found that there were three big elements of non pathological bad personality traits (N, M and P), and found they overlapped but were distinct
What are the two traits shared by all the dark triad
Callousness and manipulation. Callousness refers to having an insensitive disregard for others. manipulativeness is obvious
What are the two hypothesis around why the dark triad behave immorally
- they do not understand morality, and are consequently unable to act morally (psychopathy)
- they understand morality, but don’t give a fuck (N and M)
Big five and dark triad
the only common big five correlate is disagreeableness, though subclinical psycopaths had low neuroticism, M and P were low in conscientiousness.
Whats the problem with the personality disorder thing
So. The DSM-5 exploration of personality disorders regarding the dark five, so Psycopathic disorder (AKA antisocial disorder) and narcissism disorder, are very similar to the dark triad description, so is it a disorder at one end, or just high level of the trait?
What about sadism and Psychopathy
there are similarities, but there are still distinct differences between them. Both traits will hurt others, but different motivations for doing so; enjoyment vs will it get me what i want
What is grandiose narcisissim
Exhibitionism, self-serving distortions, egocentricity, exploitative behaviours, grandiose fantasies. More likely to come from spoilt family life
What is vulnerable narcissim
•Self-absorption•Introversion•Avoidance•Emotional instability•Fragility
What are the common features between all types of narcissim
•Low empathy•Low agreeableness•High entitlement. more likely to come from adverse childhood experiences (like abuse etc). connected to avoidant and anxious attatchment styles. Also connected to distrustful and antagonistic behaviour, stemming from emotional dysregulation
