Definition populism
Populism as a thin centered ideology that considers society to be ultimately separated into two homogeneous and antagonistic groups, ‘the pure people’ versus the ‘the corrupt elite,’ and which argues that politics should be an expression of the general will of the people
Three characteristics of populist leaders
- Simplistic answers to complex problems
- Deliberatly create we vs them questions
- Authoritarian tendency: they like elections in democracies but not the rest
Reasons of populism
- A gap between expectations on the part of the people and delivery on the part of elites
- Popular sovereignty: should have ultimate authority over political decisions, rather than
political elites, institutions, or external forces - Weak democratic governance
- Threats to culture and feelings of identity loss
Nativist populist
For the nativist populist strand, criticism commonly immigrants and other outsiders” of the nation.
Redistributionist populist
For redistributionist populists, that group is the wealthy or those considered to be
economically privileged.
Left wing populism
the main enemies of the people are the wealthy and large corporations domestically;
Right wing populism
the enemies come from beyond the border:
immigrants, refugees, international bureaucrats, and IOs themselves.
Nationalism
a political principle, which holds that the
political and the national unit should be congruent
How does nationalism relate to populism and IOs?:
The combination of populist views on redistribution and opposition to elites is most threatening to international cooperation when it is combined with nationalist or nativist opposition to economic openness, immigration, and/or the sacrifice of national sovereignty.
What is new about the recent emergence of populist, nationalist parties with strong hostility to international cooperation and institutions?:
- First, a major difference from the earlier decades of the postwar era is geography.
- Second, the populist dimension of these recent movements has shifted to become more openly nativist
Why do populist leaders seek to delegitimize IOs – what do they have to gain?:
They contest and delegitimize those IOs whose policies they do not like, especially if these IOs pursue liberal policies.
