week 9 Flashcards
(39 cards)
Ligands have
one or more donor atoms – these are atoms that have a lone pair of electrons that are able to be donated towards a metal ion.
ligand charge
neutral eg water amonia
or anionic eg chorlie cyanide CN-
Ligands can be classified by
the number of donor atoms that attach to a metal centre.
ligands with one donor atom are called monodentate; ligands with two donor atoms are call bidentate; three = tridentate, etc.
monodenatte ligands rule
can have more then one atom wich can cordinate with the metal but will on ly have one at a time
What does bidentate mean?
3x things
describes ligands with two donor atoms that can be simultaneously attached to the same metal ion
can be symmetrical or asymmetrical (i.e. have different types of donor atoms).
Just because a ligand can act as a chelating ligand, does not mean that it always will
Tridentate ligands have
three donor atoms.
What is a chelate ring?
the ring formed when a polydentate ligand coordinates to a transition metal ion
Ligands with many donor atoms are sometimes called
‘polydentate’.
the Latin name for copper
cuprate
latin name for iron
ferrate
A special class of polydentate ligands are
‘macrocyclic ligands’. As the name implies, these ligands are large ring-shaped molecules that have multiple donor atoms.
Some ligands are capable of coordinating simultaneously to multiple metals. called?
These ligands act as a bridge between the metals and are therefore called ‘bridging ligands’. Bridging ligands can have one donor atom with multiple lone pairs
What is a Lewis base?
an electron pair donor
What does monodentate mean?
describes a ligand that can coordinate to a metal ion using only one donor atom
What is nuclearity?
The nuclearity of a single coordination entity indicates the number of central atoms joined by bridging ligands or metal-metal bonds
the Latin name for lead
Plumbate
the Latin name for tin
Stannate
What are chelate complexes?
a complex ion containing one or more chelate rings
What is a coordinate bond?
a covalent bond between a Lewis acidic metal ion and a Lewis basic ligand in which both electrons originate from the ligand
What is a donor atom?
an atom of a ligand in a complex that is directly coordinated to the transition metal ion
What does polydentate mean?
describes a ligand containing two or more atoms that can coordinate simultaneously to a metal ion
True or False: chelate rings are thermodynamically very stable
ture
Are cations or anions written first when naming coordination compounds?
Cations
