Week 9 Flashcards
(8 cards)
mixed methods research
and integration of quantitative and qualitative methods in the same research project
convergent approach
quantitative = qualitative; researchers use the same research questions for both methods
additional approach
qualitative + quantitative or vice versa; researchers answer different but related questions paired with each method
sequential approach
qualitative -> quantitative or vice versa; researchers use the results of the first method to inform the use of the second method; these types of projects start with either a qualitative or quantitative method
multistage sequential
some sequential mixed methods projects have more than 2 methods; in these projects, each method informs the following method
advantages of mixed methods
expanded scope of questions, overcoming limitations of a single method, triangulation (multiple methods increase reliability and validity), sequencing methods
challenges of mixed methods
time and money, requires extra skills, uncertainty
best practices
researchers must have a strong justification for using mixed methods, clearly identify how the methods will be used, must decide which method to use first, one method is the core while the other is supplementary
