Week two chapter 7 Flashcards
(12 cards)
What determines health behaviour?
Cognitive, social, emotional, demographic factors
What are the four social cognition models
- The health belief model
- The protection motivation Theory
- Theory of planned behaviour
- Social cognitive theory
What is the health belief model
emphasises poeple will take health related actions if they believe they are at risk for a health problem
Explains health behaviours by
- focusing on an individual’s perceptions of a health problem
- their beliefs about the benefits of taking action
- and the perceived barriers to that action
What is protection motivation model
individuals are motivated to engage in protective behaviours when they perceive a threat and believe that taking action can effectively mitigate it. focusing on
- perceived threat appraisal (evaluating the percieved severity and vulnerability to the threat)
- coping appraisals. (focuses on perceived efficacy of recommended protective behaviour)
What is the Theory Of Planned Behaviour
individuals behavior is best predicted by their intention, which is, influenced by their attitude toward the behavior, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control
What is the Social cognitive theory
explains human behaviour is shaped by a dynamic between personal factors, environmental influences and behaviour. emphasising role of observation, modeling and self regulation
What are injunctive and descriptive norms
- Injunctive norms refer to what people should do based on social approval or rules
- Descriptive norms refer to what people actually do in a given situation ‘
Rutter (2000) applied the Theory of Planned Behaviour to attendance and reattendance for
breast cancer screening. What were his most important findings
- Attitude, Subjective Norms, and Perceived Behavioral Control Predict Attendance
- Perceived Behavioral Control Was the Strongest Predictor
- Past Behavior Influences Future Behavior
what is a cognitive determent of a health behaviour
the thoughts, beliefs and perceptions that influences weather a person engages in healthy or unhealthy behaviours
What is cognitive and affective attitudes?
Cognitive and affective attitudes are two components of an individual’s attitude toward something, including health behaviors.
- Cognitive Attitudes: Based on thoughts, beliefs, and knowledge about a subject.
Affective Attitudes: Based on feelings, emotions, and experiences toward a subject.
What is a intention behaviour gap?
difference between what people intend to do and what they actually do
What is intention stability?
refers to how consistent a person’s intention remains over time.
