Ordinary occupations - part of daily living, taken for granted, often habits
Special occupations - happen infrequently or carry important symbolic meaning
Articulate different ways of defining occupation
Defining: occupation is groups of activities and tasks of everyday life, named, organised and given value and meaning by individuals and culture 2. Occupation is everything people do to occupy themselves including looking after themselves, enjoying life, and contributing to the social and economic fabric of their communities (productivity) 3. The activities that comprise our life experience and can be named in the culture 4. Daily life activities in which people engage 5. Anything that we do throughout our lives that has meaning and purpose
Articulate different ways of classifying occupation
Occupation cannot be classified as individuals may experience the same occupation in different ways - it is subjective
But can be categorised in 3 broad categories
○ Leisure
§ Engage in leisure occupations for relaxation, play and enjoyment
§ Theses vary person to person but includes reading, knitting and playing sport
○ Self care
§ Enable people to remain active and independent in their everyday lives
§ Examples: showering, makeup and cooking
○ Productivity
§ People often derive meaning through their contributions
§ Schoolwork, parenting, volunteering and employment (forever changing)
And further categorised into
○ ADL (actitivites of daily living) focus on caring for one’s body and directed towards basic survival § Bathing, grooming, sexual activities ○ Instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) activities necessary for daily life but go beyond basic bodily care and survival § Home management, pet care, meal preparation ○ Educational occupations are focused on formal and informal learning such as: § Formal education participation (academic, nonacademic, extracurricular and vocational participation) § Informal personal educational needs or interests exploration § Informal personal education participation ○ Work includes § Productive activities such as employment and volunteer activities § Employment interests and pursuits § Employment seeking and acquisition § Job performance § Retirement preparation and adjustment ○ Play and leisure activities characterised by § Enjoyment or diversion § Interests and motivation of the person ○ Rest and sleep includes sleep preparation and participation § Bedtime routines § Ability to manage cues for waking such as the use of wake-up signals § Management of the physical environment ○ Social participation refers to the interweaving of § Occupations to support desired engagement in community and family activities § Involvement of peers and friends
Occupational blends versus categories
§ “Practitioners risk losing sight of the unique contexts and individual small behaviours of everyday life and everyday occupation that make up those sweeping categories”
§ “There is more to life than putting on your pants”
§ “ occupational therapy is achieving health, well-being, and participation in life through engagement in occupation”
- Understand the importance of context
Specific meaning of an occupation is known only to the individual engaged in the occupation, occupations take place in context thus have dimensions that consider other humans (social and cultural), temporality, the physical environment, context can be changeable but always present
Cautions of categorisation
Personal perspective, attention to scope and detail, clients values and choices, orchestrating life, no simple hierarchies
