Summary of the Spartacist uprising 1919
Led by Rosa Luxemburg, a group of Communists rebelled because they wanted to create a just society for workers.
The government turned to the Friekorp (a para-military group of volunteer soldiers) and defeated them.
This created a reliance for far-right groups and their ideology.
What was the Ebert-Groener Pact?
the government promise to respect the army’s traditional role and the army promised to support the Republic in response.
What did the Left and Right want for Germany?
The Left (Communists + Socialists) wanted big sweeping social change and saw the Republic as too moderate.
The Right (Nationalists + Conservatives) wanted German power and a traditional autocratic system.
What were the weaknesses of the Republic?
electoral system - proportional representation
deep divisions in society and gov (right and left)
scars from war - Treaty of Versailles
What was economically bad in the early 20s?
Hyperinflation
