What is a social group
A social group is a collection of interacting individuals who share identity, belonging and a common purpose
What is a social group built on?
Regular interaction, shared identity, sense of belonging, mutual support.
What are the types of social groups?
Primary, Secondary, Formal, Informal, Peer, Interest, Voluntary, Involuntary

What is a primary group?
A small close knit group like family that has strong emotional bonds, long term relationships and gives support.
What is a secondary group?
A larger impersonal group such as workplaces and schools that focus on specific goals with formal and structured interactions
What is a formal group?
Organizations that operate with official rules and a hierarchy to achieve specific goals
(like government bodies or trade unions)
What is an informal group?
Groups that form naturally based on shared interest or social bonds without rules or structures.
(Essentially just groups of people who hang out because they have the same interests)
What are voluntary groups?
Organizations that people choose to join based on shared interests or beliefs that normally provide non profit services
What is an involuntary group?
Groups where membership is determined by factors like birth, age or circumstances out of one’s control
