allows victims to feel a sense of retribution and disincentives taking the law into their own hands

to prevent crime in the future by ensuring the sanction discourages crime in the future
theres two types general and specific
what is general deterrance
discourages people in general from commiting the same crime
what is specific deterrence
discourages the individual from re offending
what is denunciation
designed to demonstrate the community’s
disapproval of the offender’s actions
what is protection
designed to safeguard the community from
an offender by preventing them from committing a further offence (e.g. by imprisoning the offender)
what is rehabilitation
designed to reform an offender in order to prevent them from committing offences in the future
