Communication
Communication occurs when humans manipulate symbols to stimulate meaning in other humans.
Sign
Something that stands for or represents another thing
Symptom
Type of sign.
Ex: sniffling infers one might have a cold
Symbol
Second type of sign created to stand for something else.
Ex- middle finger, fuck you.
Ritual
Signal that stands for something.
Ex- sigh= tired
Packing up at end of class.
Dialogic
Communication requires at LEAST two people.
Individual component
We don’t all share the same symbols.
Ex- two different perspectives, same situation. We don’t always all hear or read the same things as others.
Communication occurs in a context
Time and space matter.
We judge what we say, off where we are.
Problem of intent:
Not communication if the speaker had no intentions of anyone other than the parties involved decoding the information.
Coroner example
The sun is not communicating with us simply because it’s hot outside!
Attempted communication
Has an intended encoder but the message never makes it there
Attributed communication
All in the mind of the receiver. There is no sender.
Perception
What we observe about the world. Not communication.
Communication plans
Verbal & non verbal.
Verbal- script= used in predictable routine situations
Non verbal- actions we do to get what we want.
V- typical response to how is school?
Nv- looking at a guy a certain way so he will come and talk to you.
Communication is transactional
You need two people for the transaction or for communication to occur.
Functions of Communication
Entertain
Inform
Persuade- targets feelings actions and beliefs
Stimulation- reinforces change or beliefs. Increases already existing beliefs.
