What is child clinical psychology?
Classification based on a medical model. Outlined in DSM.
What does the DSM define as a disorder?
Clinically significant disturbance in an individual’s cognition, emotion regulation, or behavior that reflects a dysfunction in the psychological, biological, or developmental processes… associated with significant distress or disability in social, occupational, or other important activities.
What does it mean that the DSM is categorical?
Either an individual meets a set of diagnostic criteria for a disorder or does not.
What does it mean that the DSM is a-theoretical?
Classifies people based on observable symptoms, not hypotheses or ideas about these symptoms.
What are the three types of diagnosis?
Principal diagnosis: condition that is chiefly responsible for impairment and distress
Provisional diagnosis: strong presumption that criteria will be met for a disorder but not enough to confirm.
Other focus of clinical attention (V-code): conditions or problems that are not mental disorders but are significant enough to require clinical attention.
