Context?

A

1971

Denise levertov:
• politically active
• against US involvement in Vietnam war
• first hand experience of war - german bombing raids whilst working as a nurse in WW2
• her poems featured theme of people suffering (wanted to expose the crimes against humanity)

The Vietnam war (1955-75):
• communist north Vietnam VS anti-communist south Vietnam
• American military intervened in early 1960s, Russia & China backed the communist north
• America withdrew after a wave of protests against chemical warfare (napalm & agent orange) on village housing & innocent civilians (in 1973)
