White and Gray Matter Flashcards
(24 cards)
What does the brain stem do?
Holds the cerebrum with the spinal cord
What does the cerebrum control?
Controls over motor control, Sensory perception, language, reasoning, emotions, learning, memory
What does the cerebellum control?
Controls over emotions and spatial surroundings.
What is white matter composed of?
Myelinated axons, Glial cells, Myelin, Blood vessels
What is grey matter composed of?
Unmyelinated axons, Glial cells, Dendrites, Capillaries, Neuron cell bodies
Myelinated axons
long, slender projections of nerve cells that transmit electric signals
What is to myelinated?
to form a fatty, insulating layer around the axons
Myelin
A fatty, insulating substance that surrounds the axons, allowing for faster, more efficient signal transmission
The myelin sheath
Gives white matter its characteristic light color
Glial cells
These cells support and protect the neurons and myelin, including astrocytes, microglia, and oligodendrocytes
Myelinated Axons (nerve fibers)
These are the long, slender projections of nerve cells (neurons) that transmit electrical signals
what is to myelinate?
To myelinate is to form a fatty, insulating layer called myelin around the axons of neurons
Myelin
A fatty, insulating substance that surrounds the axons, allowing for faster and more efficient signal transmission
The myelin sheath
Gives white matter its characteristic light color
Glial cells
These cells support and protect the neurons and myelin, including astrocytes, microglia, and oligodendrocytes
Blood vessels
White matter also contains blood vessels that supply nutrients and oxygen to the tissue
Where can white matter be found?
In the deeper part of the tissue
neuron cell bodies
These are the main parts of nerve cells where the nucleus and other essential organelles are located
Dendrites
These are branching extensions of neurons that receive signals from other neurons
unmyelinated axons
Axons that are not covered in a fatty, insulating layer/sheath
capillaries
These are the smallest blood vessels, which supply nutrients and oxygen to the brain tissue
neuropil
This is a network of unmyelinated axons and dendrites
where is grey matter?
The outer layer of the brain
