More keratin , hyperkeratosis

Why are red patched red
A
Due to atrophy , hyperaemia or loss of keratin due to
- inflammation
- mucosal atrophy
- increased vascularisation
- mucosal/submucosal bleeding

A
- Congenital
- Lichen planus
- Infections - candida
- Keratosis
- Neoplastic/ potentially neoplastic

What is the management of SCC?
A
- Urgent referral to MAxfacs
- Explain concern with pt
- Explain they will need to get a sample

What is Leukoplakia
A
A white patch or plaque that cannot be characterised clinically or pathologically / cannot be rubbed away

A
- Hx
- Exclude red flags
^ does it wipe away?
^ if cause is obvious remove it then review
^ Refer if unsure

A
- Localised
- Well defined borders
- Red
- Speckled
