A new government under Lord North came into power in 1770
- replaced Hillsborough with Earl of Dartmouth and repealed all Townsend duties bar tea
- did this to show the supremacy of parliament

A

January 1766 Gov implemented the unpopular Townsend duties
- was widely unpopular and meant a loss of freedom and heavy taxes
- the duties were repealed apart from the duty on tax

Why did the Tea act cause anger ?

A
  • it allowed for the East Indian Tea company to sell tea cheaper than local tea growers
  • threatened colonial merchants selling other tea from the Dutch Caribbean
  • the same merchants acted as retailers and middlemen for the East India area purchased through Britain possibly putting merchants entirely out of business

- three ships( Dartmouth, Eleanor and the Beaver) carrying East India Tea
- December 16 a group of 60 sons of liberty men disguised as native Americans boarded the ships dumping 342 chest of tea worth $1.7 million approx today
- navy did not respond out of fear force would make the situation worse
