Why Do Some Tectonic Hazards Develop Into Disasters Flashcards
(10 cards)
What are the hazards of tectonic activity
Hazrads are physical events
Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunami
W each of these, they bring their own hazards e.g. Lahars, flooding
What are the vulnerabilities of tectonic hazards
Location of population (is it on a coast, mountains)
Proximity
Poverty, education levels, pop density
It is only a disaster when
A hazard interacts w a vulnerable pop
What is the capacity to cope
Governance, developement, planning
Disaster risk is going to increase if
Larger the hazard w a large vulnerability and a low capacity to cope is going to increases disaster risk
Pressure and Release model
Root causes include lack of governance and development can lead to the dynamic factors of vulnerabity such as levels of education, healthcare, training and investment in emergency services can lead to unsafe conditions which can interact w hazards can lead to a disaster.
Hazard profile- physical factors
Magnitude- energy released measured on moment magnitude scale, or the older scale richer scale, VEI- volcanoes only
Frequency- if it happens once every 2 yrs, people might be familiar and prepared for it and may not live in the area
Speed onset- how quickly it happens, is it hard to predict cuz this can have an impact on how people respond to it and would relate to capacity to cope
Predictability= can u say where it happens such a s volcanoes, u know that the eruption will happen at that volcano but u cat do that w an EQ
How does the hazard profiles relate to each other?
The higher the magnitude, the bigger the speed onset , the more area of will cover, the longer the duration, the bigger the disaster
Predictability will be have an impact on the level of disaster
Vulnerability and capacity to cope factor
Development= access to good quality of housing, education so they know what to do, good healthcare services to cope with disaster
Governance= political, economic, and adminstrive governance cuz there will have impact on things like land-use planning, where people can build, law enforcement codes, are people obliged to build safe, EQ proof buildings, is protection built into infrastructure
, do they have a well trained response
Geographical factors
Pop density
Isolation and accessibility= difficult to access mountain regions
Urbanisation= large slum settlement are badly designed, difficult for buildings to withstand
