Flame height
Flame depth
Fuel load
Junction zone
Types of heat transfer?
Convection
Conduction
Radiation
Types of fires
Ground fire
Surface fire
Crown fire
Spot fire
Grassland fire
Forrest fire
What must there be for spotting to occur?
A suitable fuel type
Sufficient energy to carry particles
A receptive fuel load
What are the parts of a wildfire?
Heel
Flank
Fingers
Head
Point of origin
Understanding bushfire behaviour allows you to?
Anticipate, avoid and or control fire hazards
Fight the fire more effectively
Use common terminology
Bushfire behaviour depends on?
Fuel
Weather
Topography
What factors to consider with fuel?
Size/quantity
Arrangement
Moisture content
What level of humidity for wildfire?
Easy ignition under 40%
Spreading grass fire 30%
Crown fires 25%
Major wildfires 15%
What SOG covers wildfire?
SOG #7
What is aspect?
The direction a feature or slope is facing
How will topography affect fire?
Based on slope fire rate of spread will double for every 10 degrees upslope and half for every 10 degrees downslope
How does ACTFR respond to wildfire?
Based on location
Cross crewed unless standup day
All PPE including structural and BA
Light units typically have SO/MD
Two remaining FF in tanker
What’s does LACES stand for?
Look out
Awareness
Communications
Escape route
Saftey refuge
What are fire ground rules?
One foot in the black
Leave engine/pump running at all times
Be conservative with water
Use tank water and refill when necessary
Have windows and vents closed
Plan & know escape routes
Full PPE
Main hazards?
Trees
Vehicles accidents
Fire overruns
Heart attacks
What are some offensive strategies?
Direct attack
Parallel attack
Indirect attack
What are some defensive tactics?
Line defence
Ember defence
Backstop defence
What is mop up?
Once fire is contained raking, digging out material to ensure extinguished
What is patrolling?
Traversing of fire edge either by foot, vehicle or air as soon as a control line is established
What do you do after incident?
Remove consumables
Recover, check and clean equipment
Report missing/damaged equipment
Replenish supplies
Debrief
Secure station
What can you do to help preserve scene?
Note point of origin
Note any vehicle or people leaving scene
Ensure area is disturbed as little as possible
Don’t move or take any debris including water bottles
Note & mark any possible causes such as fuel cans etc
