Q

Noetic quality

A

Mystical experiences must give rise to knowledge. People who have RE can be perceived as having some authority on religous terms.

Q

Did james believe in the criteria or the way that they present itself

A

Criteria are what matters, rather than the way by which the mystical experience present themselves

It does not matter how the experience comes to fruition/ achievement, all that matters is that it fulfils the criteria. Yoga, music, drugs and Deja vu are all valid forces of ME

Q

What does he believe about drug induced ME

A

Drug induced ME is a valid way of knowing god.
Talked about a person inhaling nitrous oxide being revealed ‘depth beyond depth of truth’

Q

God meeting the individual on a personal basis

A

God provides individualistic support to push each person towards their ideal life. He believed that different traditions have various ways of accessing the realm of the sacred e.g. Hindus may practice yoga, Buddhists may meditate, making him a pluralist. God reveals himself to individuals w different characteristics based on how that person needs ‘saving’

Q

Corporeal vision

A

Fantasies turn into a reality which becomes a shared experience for all
Occur wen a person appears to perceive a religious figure or message thru their physical senses, particularly sight
Vision seems to take place in the external world, as though the indivual is literally seeing something present before them

Bernadette Sourbirous saw a vision of the Virgin Mary at Lourdes in France in 1858, instructing her to drink at the fountain and wash herself there.
This then helped healed 69 other wounds

Corporeal as it involves the normal sensory faculties

Q

Imaginative vision

A

Which occur not thru physical senses but w the mind itself
Visions involve mental images, dreams or symbolic scenes that communicate a message from god.
As they r symbolic they often require interpretation to understand their meaning

Person has no control over their mindly vision (same as introvertive )
Joseph Egypt 7 yrs of famine which became a reality

Q

Intellectual visions

A

Highest form of vision according to Augustine

Person does not perceive physical images or symbolic pictures at all, instead they gain a direct inner understanding of divine truth

God allows the indivuald to grasp spiritual realities beyond normal sensory expericne

Intrinsic and personal, doesn’t turn into a reality for all but just the individual e.g. st teresa of Avila experienced a deep and overwhelming presence of god but saw no form

Q

‘ME can be reached by any means’ (15)
1) Stace’s Introvertive argument

A

Through Staces’ criteria of mystical experience, he places emphasis on achieving true unity with the divine which transcends the ego and ordinary consciousness.

He explores this through his introvertive and extrovertive dichotomy which challenges this notion of it being reached by any means as it proposes this idea that ME are not just altered states of consciousness but must involve a profound sense of unity with the divine, which is elusive because it deals with something that cannot be easily explained or controlled.

introvertive argument which indicates that the subject must achieve total suppression of the world and the ‘I’ and their normal consciousness is replaced w the mystical consciousness.

However, there is empirical evidence that indicates that achieving unity with the divine migh not be so difficult as medial illnesses such as temporal lobe epilepsy can make one more susceptible to religious experiences, to which the medical mind terms as hallucinations.

Although medical illnesses can induce similar experices , they don’t necessarily achieve the profound unity and uthenticity which stace views as essential mechanisms of verifying ME.

‘ME can be reached by any means’ (15)
2) James

A

James’ 4 criteria’s indicate that not all mystical xperiences can produce the same criteria’s to be considered authentic.

Despite James acknowledging the plethora of tactics that can induce similar, altered states akin to mystical ones, he argues that they cannot produce the same noetic quality or ineffabilty characteristics which he defines as pillars of a true mystical experience.

James accepts some drug-induced mystical experiences, arguing that if they convey personal truth, they should be accepted. This undermines his own argument, as his broad criteria inadvertently legitimise drug-induced MEs.

Overall suggesting that his criteria for authentic ME can be applied equally to drug induced states which aligns with this statement that it can be reached by ‘any means’.

Despite James acceptance of some drug induced states, he is cautious of it lacking passivity another 1 of his criteria’s,as ME thru chemical agents does not lead to feelings of being overpowered by a force that is not self induced. Concluding, that drug induced states that might mimicking ME lack the transformative nature of true ME.

Q

‘ME can not be verified’ (15)
1) James

A

James’ four criteria show that not all mystical experiences (MEs) can be verified as authentic.

James accepts some drug-induced mystical experiences, arguing that if they convey personal truth, they should be accepted.

this broadens his criteria and risks legitimising states that cannot be fully verified.

Despite James acknowledging the plethora of tactics that can induce similar, altered states akin to mystical ones, he argues that they cannot produce the same noetic quality or ineffabilty characteristics which he defines as pillars of a true mystical experience, which r needed for verification

Overall, his framework suggests that religious experiences can be verified against specific characteristics, but experiences induced by chemical means typically fail to produce the transformative effect of authentic MEs and therefore cannot be verified as genuine.

2)Otto ineffabilty

A

Ottos concept of experiencing the numinous, where consciousness encounters a sphere which goes beyond the domain of ethics which he termed as the ‘wholly other’, he describes the experience to be ‘mystrium et fascnans, invites a non rational, unexplainable awe inspiring fascination towards the divine which is Sui generis. One of a kind.

Indeed ineffabilty mean that people can’t explain their experience as it remains a private phenomena

Weakness= in Oder for a fact to be verified, it must rely on evidence that can be articulated and critiqued by others, to which ineffabilty refuses.

Although this argument has some merits, it could be countered as ineffabilty is a sign from god, as in the presence of such higher power, it is normal to not be able to term ur experience into the realm of human linguistics as god is omnipotent, therefore ineffabilty is a confirmation of god.

Nonetheless, still weak dies a death of 1000 qualifications, This is just a way for religious believers to protect God’s existence—they keep changing or adding to their statements to defend their belief while staying firmly committed.

Q

RE can only be meaningful for the subject (15)

A

1) although some say that they can hv significance beyond the individual that is ultimately unconvincing as RE is by nature ineffable (Otto)
Vs however unsuccessfully that some RE have real life consequences which makes it meaningful for external parties e.g soubirous’ visions at Lourdes

2) James analysis of mystical union highlights that RE r transformative only for the individual
