Wk 5 Antihypertensive medications Flashcards
(26 cards)
ACE inhibitors action
2
- block production of Ag II leading to vasodilation
2. excretes sodium and water and retention of K by kidneys
ACE inhibitors - uses
- HTN
- HF
- MI
- nephropathy
ACE inhibitor s/e
3
- first dose hypotension
- cough
- hyperkalemia
ACE inhibitors rx names
2
- enalapril/Vasotec
2. lisinopril/Prinivil, Zestril
ARBS action
blocks Ag II resulting in vasodilation and excretion of sodium and water
ARBS uses
4
- HTN
- HF
- stroke prevention
- nephropathy
what is difference between ARBS and ACE inhibitors
cough and hyperkalemia are not s/e of ARBS
ARBS s/e
2
- angioedema - give epinephrine if needed
2. fetal injury
beta blockers action
3
beta1-adrenergic blockage in the myocardium and electrical condition resulting in:
- decrease HR
- decrease contractility
- decrease rate of conduction through AV nodes
BB uses
6
- angina
- dysrhythmias
- HF
- MI
- HTN
- stage fright
beta1 blockade BB a/e
3
- bradycardia - monitor pulse, do not give if under 60
- decrease CO
- AV block
BB rx
2
- metoprolol/Lopressor
2. propranolol/Inderal
CCB action
decrease peripheral resistance by relaxing smooth muscle, limits muscle contraction
CCB uses
3
- angina
- dysrhythmias
- HTN
CCB - with all check these 4 -monitor -do not -watch for -give
- monitor BP, HR, weight, edema
- do not administer w/ grapefruit
- watch for bradycardia
- give cautiously for pts with digoxin (can increase dig levels)
CCB rx
diltiazem/Cardizem
four main classes of diuretics
- high loop (K wasting)
- thiazide diuretics
- K sparing
- osmotic diuretics
osmotic diuretics works where
proximal convoluted loop
diuretics - high loop aka
K wasting
high loop is where
thick ascending loop of Henle
high loop rx
furosemide/Lasix
fureosemide/Lasix is to
high loop - potassium wasting
furosemide/Lasix a/e
ototoxicity (give slow IV push) and avoid other ototoxic meds i.e. gentamyacin
first choice drug for essential HTN
thiazide diuretic - hydrochlorothiazide
