1
Q

What is spinal traction ?

A

Q

What is the theory behind traction ?

A

by increasing the dimensions of the IVF containing the spinal nerve root you may normalize the spinal disc’s position and morphology leading to painful symptoms

Q

Define Positional traction.

A

prolonged specific positioning to place tension or open the IVF on one side of the spine.

Q

According to the research what are some effects of cervical traction ?

A
  1. increased blood flow, fluid exchange, and nutrient transport within the disc
  2. Increased IVF space: may relieve compression on spinal nerve roots
  3. Disc herniations may be reduced
  4. Decrease in pain with some conditions

Q

According to the research what are some effects of lumbar traction ?

A
  1. enhanced fluid exchange and nutrient transport within the disc
  2. Passive traction may lead to reduced intradiscal pressure
  3. Decrease nerve root compression in some radicular disorders
  4. expanse of disc material is suggested to reduce disc herniation in some subjects

Q

What are the general indications for traction ?

Q

When deciding to use mechanical traction what seems to be the consensus for its use ?

A

If the patient benefits from manual traction then they may be a good candidate for mechanical

Q

Explain the proper dosage for Lumbar mechanical traction.

A

total duration: 10-20 minutes
cycle time:
static or intermittent: 30s on : 10 off, 60s on: 20 off
Force: up to 50% of patients body weight, max. for minimum, 1/4th of patient’s body weight

16
Q

What should you be looking for post traction ?

A

rebound effect where the patient may or may not experience negative symptoms

17
Q

What are positive symptoms following traction ?

A

decrease symptoms, centralization of the same, increased ROM/strength, improved ability to perform ADL’s, improved reflexes/sensations, increase in symptom free SLR in lumbar patients

18
Q

What should you be sure to leave the patient during traction ?

A

call bell and safety switch
