What is destructive leadership? Is it always purely bad?
Most leadership relationships have some degree of positive and negative elements.
It compromises the quality of life for stakeholders and detracts from organisational vision.
What are the five features of destructive leadership?
- rarely entirely destructive
- dominance, coercion, manipulation of followers.
- Selfish orientation - designed to serve leader’s needs.
- outcomes compromise the quality of life and detract from organisation’s vision.
- Destructive outcomes are products of leaders, followers, and environment (context).

- lost souls - low self concept, identify with leader
- bystanders - low courage, sheep person
- opportunists - highly ambitious, greedy, impulsive
- acolytes - complete identificaiton with leader, takes leaders goals and makes them their own.
- authoritarian - power hungry, black/white thinking of the world.

Organisations success and failures are disproportionately attributed to the leadership.

- Sheep - passive, do minimum required
- Yes people - active followers, uncritical
- Survivors - mediocre ability, opportunists
- alienated followers - critical, focus on negative aspects.
- effective followers - active, independent and critical thinkers.
Leaderned helplessness is what?
Followers increasing dependence on the leader for guidance. Absence of leader creates a collapse in follower performance.
