Endometriosis is a condition where the tissue that normally grows inside the uterus begins to grow other places outside the uterine walls, such as the fallopian tubes, ovaries, and even the intestines if it is bad enough. Although the cause of endometriosis is unknown, there are several factors that can increase the risk: retrograde menstruation, where the blood that normally shed during menses flows back up into the fallopian tubes, hormones that cause overproduction of the endometrial cells, surgical scar implantation, or even the immune system. Obesity, diabetes mellitus, and PCOS all may be risk factors in other conditions, but not for developing endometriosis.
