Q

BRACKETING PARADOX

A

bracketing paradox – mismatch between the
meaning inferred from the structure (bracketing)
and the actual meaning of a complex word
-the affix doesn’t have the scope over a single base
(work, physics) but over the entire phrase (hard
work, nuclear physics)
 better described as affixation of phrases nuclear
physics, transformational grammar, plastic
surgery, etc.
