Flashcards in Work And Machines Deck (18):
1

Work

In scientific terms, you do work any time you exert a force on an object that causes the object to move any distance.

2

Joule

When force is measured in newtons and distance in meters, the SI unit of work is the newton-meter. This unit is also called joule.

3

Power

Power is the rate at which work is done.

4

Watt

One joule of one work done is one second is one Watt of power.

5

Machine

Machines are devices that allow you to work in an easier way.

6

Input Force

When you do the work, the force you exert is called input force.

7

Output force

The machine exerts the output force over the output distance.

8

Mechanical advantage

A machine’s mechanical advantage is a number of times a machine increases a force exerted on it.

9

Efficiency

The efficiency of a machine compares output work to the input work.

10

Simple Machines

A simple machine is the most basic device for making work easier.

11

Inclined plane

An inclined plane is a flat, slope surface.

12

Wedge

A wedge is a device that is thick at one end and tapers to a thin edge at the other end.

13

Screw

Like a wedge, a screw is a simple machine that is related to the inclined plane.

14

Lever

A lever is a rigid bar is free to pivot, or rotate, on a fixed force.

15

Fulcrum

The fixed point that a lever pivots around is called the fulcrum.

16

Pulley

A pulley is a simple machine made of grooved wheel with a rope or cable wrapped around it.

17

Wheel and axle

A simple machine made of two connected objects that rotate in a common axis is called wheel axle.

18

Compound machine

A machine that combines two or more simple machines is called a compound machine.
