working memory model Flashcards
(10 cards)
Who developed the working memory model?
Baddely and Hitch (1974)
What are the 4 key components of the working memory model?
- Central Executive
- Phonological loop
- Visuo-spatial sketchpad
-Episodic buffer
What are the roles of the central executive?
- decided what to pay attention too
- delegates tasks to slave systems
What is the capacity of the central executive?
-limited
processes information from sensory systems
Describe the phonological loop?
consists of the articulatory loop which allows for maintenance rehearsal
also known as the ‘inner ear’ deals with auditory information
What is the capacity of the articulatory loop?
2 seconds worth of what you can say
Describe the visuo-spatial sketchpad
Has two sub-systems
- visual cache + inner scribe
also known as the ‘inner eye’ deals with visual and spatial information
What is the visual cache?
stores visual data
What is the inner scribe?
records arrangement of objects in the visual field
What was the dual task performance?
Baddely and Hitchs study stating that we can perform two tasks simultaneously as long as they are from different slave systems
