Working memory model Flashcards
(16 cards)
Who devised the WMM?
Baddeley + Hitch
What are the 4 slave systems of WMM?
Central executive
Phonological loop
Visuo-spatial sketchpad
Episodic buffer
What is the role of the central executive?
Determines how resources are allocated
Reasoning/decision making
In control
What is the role of the phonological loop?
Deals with auditory information
What are the 2 parts of the phonological loop?
Phonological store Articulatory system (maintenance rehearsal)
What is the role of the visuo-spatial sketchpad?
Stores visual information
What are the 2 parts of the visuo-spatial sketchpad?
Visuo-cache
Inner-scribe
What is the role of the episodic buffer?
General, extra storage system
Integrates information from all the other slave systems
What are the 3 types of LTM?
Episodic
Procedural
Semantic
What is episodic memory?
Personal memories of events
What is semantic memory?
Facts
What is procedural memory?
Implicit
What are 2 strengths of WMM
RS - Dual task performance –> Baddeley
Brain scan evidence for different types of LTM
What are 4 weaknesses of WMM
OP.A - MSM more emphasis on rehearsal
RL - brain-damaged patients are rare
TL - EB and CE not fully explained, vague
Difficult to distinguish between episodic and semantic LTM
Outline dual task performance
Asked to perform 2 tasks at the same time: repeat a list of numbers and answer true/false questions
What were the findings of dual task performance?
Study showed that CE was used in true/false and phonological loop in digit task.
Suggests it is easier to do two tasks at the same time if they use different processing systems than if they use the same slave system.
