A

Short term memory model
describes the process of memory and how visual and audio stimuli is processed and stored

Q

Phonological loop

A

AUDITORY short term memory
stores what we hear
helps us understand sentences and is able to retain entire sentence
Words and audio are processed here

Q

Phonological store

A

(inner ear) processes speech perception and stores spoken words we hear for 1-2 seconds

Q

Articulatory control process

A

(inner voice) processes speech production and REHEARSES and stores verbal information from phonological store

Q

Visuospatial Sketchpad

A

VISUAL short term memory
stores what we see
helps us picture things

Q

Visuospatial sketchpad example

A

How many windows in your house?
Image is retrieved from LTM through episodic buffer onto visuospatial sketchpad

Q

The central executive

A

puts together SOUNDS and VISION of short term memory
Coordinates phonological loop and visuospatial sketchpad and relates them to long term memory
controls our attention which enables us to perform mental manipulation of data

Q

Central executive example

A

Central executive directs attention and gives priority to certain activities
(eg. choosing to focus on driving rather than answering a question)

Q

3 main functions of central exec
1. Inhibition

A

an aspect of attention; screening our relevant stimuli

3. updating

A

modifying items brought from long term memory before recommitting them to memory through episodic buffer

Q

Episodic buffer

A

Retrieves information from long term memory to associate with information in short term memory. Selects and encodes memory into LTM

Q

Strengths of working memory model

A

supports that short term memory is made up of multiple components, explains more than multi store model
A case study of someone who injured their short term memory had impaired audio memory but his visual memory remained intact

Q

Limitations of working memory model

A

Don’t have seperate components for visual information as spatial awareness isn’t completely a visual thing (blind people being able to navigate through senses)
little evidence for central executive
doesn’t include sensory or long term memory

Q

Evidence for working memory model

A

If two tasks require use of the same component of working memory model they cannot be performed together
If two tasks require use of two different components they can be performed together
